Internships
WHAT IS A HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP?
A hotel internship is a non-traditional academic experience that relates to a work
experience that is coordinated by an on-site supervisor and a faculty sponsor. Students
may receive remuneration for the work related experience.
HOW AND WHEN CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
You may begin an internship any time after the completion of your SOPHOMORE year.
You do not receive credit for the actual work experience, however, the following are the
hour requirements of work based on the number of credits for which you have registered.
You may register for 2 - 12 credits.
CREDITS WEEKS HOURS/WEEK TOTAL HOURS/
SEMESTER*
12 15 40 600
10 15 32 480
8 15 32 480
6 15 24 360
4 15 16 240
2 15 8 120
* If you are registered for an internship for 8 or more credits and are volunteering
your time, the number of hours/week is reduced by one-half. For instance, if your
internship is for ten credits and you volunteer your time, you are expected to spend 16
hours per week working on your internship.
To earn internship credits you must perform the functions of your work experience as
agreed upon with the on-site supervisor and receive certifications from that supervisor
that you have performed satisfactorily in your job. You must also complete one assignment,
as outlined in the Department of Hotel Administration Internship Manual, for each two
credits. The completed assignments are to be submitted to your supervisor and faculty
sponsor.
The faculty sponsor will help you find a position, or if you have a job in the
field, it frequently qualifies. Most employers are happy to cooperate. The employer is
asked to complete evaluation forms and provide you with the direction necessary to
complete the assignments. Normally, internships will be established by the faculty
sponsor. Some internships will only run for the 15 weeks of the semester while other
on-going internships run for 28 weeks.
